Freedom to starve is no freedom at all.

Jason learned that when he was young, and on the run from CPS.  He was free to starve, free to sell himself, and that was no freedom at all.

If he wasn't so scared of the foster families he'd heard of he'd turn himself in, and as he slept alone in the small room of the abandoned building that was his and shivered, he wanted to go to the cops and give away his freedom.

In the end, he kept that freedom.

Freedom to be alone is no freedom at all.

Jason learned that when he cut loose from Talia and Tommy, and faced the Bats alone, a snarling spitfire of a memory, starving for revenge and remembrance.

They wouldn't let him take either, though he was free to try, and try he did, refusing to give up his freedom to starve and his freedom to be alone.

Bruce was gone, and Jason's freedom with him, and he looked at Tim, his replacement, through the glass, and he was handed his freedom in a jar.

He took that freedom and sat back to look at it, and wonder what he wanted to do with it.  Jason never claimed to be a fast learner, and he realized what Bruce had tried to teach him.

Power was control, and freedom was following rules.

He bent his head on his knees in front of Bruces' stone and wept, because he couldn't give up his freedom.
